Fractional jet ownership is a great product for some, but most certainly not for all. Moving to fractional jet ownership is a big move and requires a very careful review of your specific needs…Why? Because fractional ownership can actually cost you a lot more than standard retail jet charter if you aren’t a perfect candidate. Let’s look at a typical Netjets or Flexjet fractional jet program as an example (pricing is subject to change, but this should give you an idea).
For an entry level Raytheon Hawker 400XP – light jet, a 1/16 share will cost $425,625 and will give you about 50 hours of use on the jet. On top of that, you will have to pay a monthly management fee of approximately $7,800. Once you have paid your fixed costs, you will be able to use the aircraft for an hourly occupancy rate of about $1,800 plus an hourly fuel surcharge of around $550. Your hourly occupancy rate is wheels up to wheels down plus 6 minutes taxi time at each end and additional airport taxes also apply.
At the end of the day, with all of the fixed and hourly costs, you will have paid about $220,000 for 50 hours flying. This comes to $4,400 per hour. A standard retail jet charter price on this type of aircraft is just about $2,200 – which means that not only do you have to make a large upfront cash contribution to the fractional jet program, but you end up paying twice as much for the same aircraft Studio Jet can provide.
That’s right, the benefits aren’t necessarily greater with a fractional program. As a matter of fact, with the fractional jet program, you are typically locked in to using the jet size that you committed to. Some programs will allow you to upgrade to a large jet for a big chunk of change…but why be locked into one thing, when Studio Jet Charter can offer you access to any size jet, anytime you need it and half the cost of a fractional jet program? Don’t think this is real? Get in touch with a fractional jet company to see for yourself, then give us a call and we will let you know the cost of the same jet with our n0-membership, no-deposit, no-long term commitment charter program.
For a very small group of charter clients, Fractional Ownership can make sense. Typically if you fly more than 250 hours or so and need a large tax write off… Give us a call and we can work the numbers for you, so see what program works best for your needs…there really are a lot of details to consider. What type of plane? How many hours you need? Can you upgrade when you need to? These are just a few of the questions you need to answer to determine the best way to go….but definitely don’t pay more than you need to.
